celimax Blackhead Jojoba Cleansing Oil: the one I buy for a result, not a feel

Heads up: some links below are affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you buy through them — at no extra cost to you. I bought this bottle with my own money, and my honest opinion is never for sale.

The short answer

If blackheads are what brought you to an oil cleanser in the first place, celimax Blackhead Jojoba Cleansing Oil is the one I would put in your basket. Of the five Korean oils I have read the labels on, it prints the most of what it advertises: jojoba seed oil at 1,500ppm, against 10ppm for the heartleaf in the oil everyone talks about.

Be ready for the texture, though. It is the heaviest of the five and the pump takes real force. If you want something weightless, this is not your bottle. Bought again — Sunny

Why this one and not the famous one

Most people arriving at Korean cleansing oils arrive at Anua first, and Anua is a good oil. I said so in its own review. But the two bottles are doing different jobs, and the Korean labels say so out loud.

Korean rules make a brand print the concentration of the ingredient it puts in the product name. So:

OilHeadline ingredientPrinted%
celimaxJojoba seed oil1,500 ppm0.15%
Beauty of JoseonGinseng seed oil1,000 ppm0.1%
AnuaHeartleaf extract10,000 ppb0.001%

Those last two rows are not a typo. A part per million is a thousand parts per billion, so Anua's 10,000ppb is 10ppm. celimax prints roughly a hundred and fifty times more of its headline ingredient.

That does not make Anua a bad oil and it does not make celimax a cure. It tells you which bottle is built around its name and which one is built around its texture. If you came here because of blackheads, you want the first kind.

The texture is the catch, and you should know it before you order

It is the heaviest of the five. The pump is stiff enough that I notice it every time, and on a cold morning you press harder. Spread on the skin it feels like more product than Anua does, and it takes a beat longer to rinse away.

Two pumps, which is what I use on a full face of sunscreen. (My own photo.)

Here is the part worth knowing: Anua and celimax open with the same first ingredient, ethylhexyl palmitate, and they feel nothing alike. Whatever decides how an oil feels on your face, it is not the ingredient at the top of the list. That is the single most useful thing I learned from lining these five bottles up.

Scent, and who has to skip this bottle

The Korean label declares bergamot oil, plus two allergens by name: linalool and limonene. The smell itself is a soft citrus and I find it easy to live with.

But declared is declared. If you avoid fragrance because your skin reacts or because you have been told to, this is not the bottle, and I would rather say so than sell you one you will return. The comparison has the one with nothing of the sort listed.

What celimax says about the second cleanse

celimax states on the box that no foam cleanser is needed afterwards if you rinse thoroughly. Not every Korean brand says that, and it is a real difference between bottles rather than marketing.

I still wash after it most nights. I wear sunscreen every day and a second cleanse is the step that decides how an oil feels an hour later, which is a thing I go into in the format guide.

So, should you buy it

Yes, if blackheads are the reason you are shopping for an oil at all. This is the bottle on my shelf that I buy for a result rather than for how it feels, and the label backs that up rather than contradicting it.

No, if you want a weightless oil. Go to Anua. No, if you avoid fragrance — bergamot, linalool and limonene are all declared here.

And if you are still deciding between formats altogether, oil versus balm versus milk, I wrote the pores version of that question separately, because the answer is not the same one.

Questions people ask

Does celimax Blackhead Jojoba Cleansing Oil actually help with blackheads?

I can tell you what is in it and what I do, not what will happen on your nose. The Korean label prints jojoba seed oil at 1,500ppm, which is the highest headline-ingredient figure of the Korean oils I have read, and this is the bottle I have repurchased for a result rather than for how it feels. Nobody can promise you a blackhead outcome, and anyone who does is selling.

How much jojoba is in celimax cleansing oil?

1,500ppm, which is 0.15%, printed on the Korean label. For scale, Anua prints its heartleaf at 10,000ppb, which is 10ppm. That makes celimax's headline ingredient roughly 150 times more concentrated than Anua's.

Is celimax cleansing oil fragrance-free?

No. The Korean label declares bergamot oil, and two allergens, linalool and limonene. The scent is a soft citrus and it is mild, but if you avoid fragrance on principle this bottle is not the one.

Do I need a second cleanser after celimax?

celimax states on its own box that no foam cleanser is needed afterwards if you rinse thoroughly. I still use a second cleanser most nights, mainly because I wear sunscreen every day and it is habit.

Is celimax good for dry skin?

It is the heaviest of the five oils I tested, which usually suits dry skin better than oily. The trade-off is that it feels like more product on your face while you are using it.

What is the first ingredient in celimax cleansing oil?

Ethylhexyl palmitate, a synthetic ester. Anua's oil opens with the same ingredient, and the two feel completely different on my hands, which is a useful reminder that the top of an ingredient list does not predict texture.
